Ombudsman Morales unfazed by impeachment threat

Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales is unfazed by the threat of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) to file an impeachment complaint against her for betrayal of public trust.

"I accept any complaint filed against me. I'm going to look at the charges and if the charges merit my consideration, then I will answer them," Morales told GMA News by phone.

VACC, in a forum last week, said it would file an impeachment complaint against Morales once House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez decides to either sponsor it or refer it to other lawmakers.

The group was blaming Morales for the slow progress of the case filed against several officials of the Aquino administration in connection with the January 2015 Mamasapano clash that left over 60 people dead, 44 of them elite policemen.

VACC also scored Morales for allegedly refusing to hold former President Benigno Aquino III, who appointed her to her position, accountable in the infamous clash.

Morales, however, was steadfast in her decision regarding Aquino. "Kung gusto niyong i-implicate si Aquino, go ahead. We will have to resolve the cases on the basis of the evidence against Aquino," she said.

VACC said its impeachment complaint already has the support of several lawmakers. —KBK, GMA News
