American soldiers spotted in Marawi City

Members of the United States Special Operations Forces have been spotted in Marawi City, site of recent fierce clashes between government troops and members of the ISIS-inspired Maute group, GMA News’ Raffy Tima reported on Balita Pilipinas on Monday.

The American troops were seen at Camp Ranao military camp, far from the battle area, the report said. They were carrying their equipment and most of them were armed.

The US Embassy has confirmed the presence of Special Operations Forces in Marawi City, saying they were sent there after the Philippine government asked for assistance, the report said.

Their participation, however, was only limited to technical assistance, the report added, citing the US Embassy.

The embassy refused to give additional details about the American military presence in the city.

According to security analyst Prof. Rommel Banlaoi, under the Visiting Forces Agreement, American soldiers are not allowed to participate in the actual battle.

“Dapat limitado lamang sa pagpo-provide ng intelligence information at technical assistance and advice on tactical operational and strategical level,” Banlaoi said.

The ongoing conflict between the military and the Maute group in Marawi City entered its 21st day on Monday as the country celebrates the 119th anniversary of its independence.

Over 40 soldiers and policemen, 138 Maute group members and 21 civilians have been killed and thousands of families in the city and nearby areas have been displaced because of the clashes.  —Erwin Colcol/KBK, GMA News
