Australian journalist covering Marawi crisis hit by stray bullet

An Australian journalist covering the crisis in Marawi City was hit by a stray bullet in the neck Thursday.

The victim was identified as Adam Harvey, Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Southeast Asia correspondent based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

In a Twitter post of dzBB reporter Allan Gatus, Harvey was seen going out of Amai Pakpak Medical Center after receiving treatment. Harvey was wearing a neck brace.

“I felt something on my neck, I think it was a shrapnel. I’m fine,” Harvey was heard saying.

Meanwhile, a report by GMA News’ Sandra Aguinaldo on Balitanghali said Harvey sustained the bullet wound on the left side of his neck.

The journalist was taking footage and interviewing evacuees inside the Lanao del Sur capitol complex when the incident happened.

Harvey felt pain on his neck area during the interviews and immediately proceeded to the capitol’s infirmary.

The report said Harvey’s fellow journalists also trooped to the infirmary to check on their colleague’s situation.

Harvey will undergo X-ray and further medical evaluation at the Amai Pakpak Medical Center. The rest of the his crew also joined him en route to the hospital, the report said.

“I’m fine, I’m fine. I’m just going to get an X-ray to get [the wound] checked out,” Harvey said.

It is not yet known where the bullet came from but the report suggest the close proximity of the capitol complex to the Army base of the 103rd Infantry Brigade. — Amita Legaspi and Joseph Tristan Roxas/RSJ, GMA News
