Duterte emerges from 1-wk ‘absence,’ urges Mindanaoans to stay vigilant amid attacks

Amid concern and speculations on his health, President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday emerged from a week-long absence from the public eye and faced a gathered crowd in Agusan del Norte to urge Filipinos to remain vigilant amid terror attacks in Mindanao.

"Let the joyful commemoration encourage people and public servants and local leaders to cause their good governance and advance our people's welfare. As fellow Mindanaoans, I ask for your continued vigilance as we express essential measure for the safety of our people and for the restoration of public order in communities affected by terrorism," said Duterte in his speech during the 50th founding anniversary of the Agusan del Norte province held at University of Cabadbaran.

This was Duterte's first public appearance in six days.

"The existence of the conflict in Marawi is an ongoing battle of every citizen who wants prosperity. I also ask you for your participation in our fight against all forms of corruption, criminality and all," Duterte said.

"Together we will work relentlessly in overcoming obstacles in our way to become a more inclusive and progressive society," he added.

Questions on Duterte's health condition emerged after he skipped the Independence Day ceremony at Rizal Park on June 12.

Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella, however, explained that the country's chief executive, who is 72 years old, is "well" and  “taking some time off to rejuvenate.” — MDM, GMA News
