Stray bullet hits teacher inside MSU compound in Marawi

A 54-year-old teacher was hit by a stray bullet while inside her home inside the Mindanao State University's compound in Marawi City.

Authorities said Nora Jarlata, a primary and secondary school teacher at the MSU, was about to sit at her home's sala when she was hit by a stray bullet in her feet.

The incident happened amid an airstrike at the main battle area in Marawi City, which is at least a kilometer away from the university.

It was not yet clear if the bullet was fired by a Maute group member or the government troops.

Jarlata has been brought to the Amai Pakpak Medical Center for treatment.

Dr. Al Rayan Barurang, Amai Pakpak's ortophedic surgeon, said the bullet was fired from a high-powered firearm.

Hundreds of people, mostly Maute group members, have been killed and injured in the ongoing conflict in Marawi City.

The conflict started on May 23 following an attack by the Maute group, which prompted President Rodrigo Duterte's declaration of martial law in Mindanao.

The MSU was forced to close following the attack. It reopened on August 22. —report from Ian Cruz/ALG, GMA News
