AFP expels Maute-ISIS from Bato Mosque, JIMF after fierce battle

The Armed Forces of the Philippines revealed on Saturday that military forces had seized the Bato Mosque and the Amaitul Islamiya Marawi Foundation (JIMF) building in Marawi City - two major Maute-ISIS strongholds in the city.

The strong-points, as well as the buildings in the periphery of the mosque and the JIMF, were seized at around 5 p.m., after a fierce five hour gun-battle.

“This enormous AFP gain further weakened the terrorist group by denying them their erstwhile command and control hub,” said AFP Chief General Eduardo Año in a statement.

“As follow up and clearing operations continue, we expect the enemy to yield more previously occupied positions, but not without a fight. We are ready for that."

Given the gains, the military urged the remaining Maute gunmen, as well as former hostages turned fighters, to surrender "while they still have time.” — DVM, GMA News
