Belief in PNP claims on slain drug suspects declines in Q3 – SWS


The number of adult Filipinos who believed the Philippine National Police's claims that illegal-drugs suspects slain by police officers had resisted arrest declined during 2017's third quarter, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) poll found.

The SWS' third quarter poll had asked subjects, "In the government’s campaign against illegal drugs, the police are (Definitely telling the truth; Probably telling the truth; Undecided if telling the truth or not; Probably not telling the truth; Definitely not telling the truth) that the suspects they killed really resisted them?"

The poll found that 37 percent of respondents said that the PNP was not telling the truth on suspect slayings. Among these respondents, 19 percent said the police were definitely not telling the truth, and another 19 percent said the police were probably not telling the truth.

Some 17 percent of respondents said the police were telling the truth, with 13 percent saying the police were probably telling the truth and five percent saying the police were definitely telling the truth.

The remaining 45 percent said they were undecided on the matter.

The net opinion on the truthfulness of police claims (percentage of those who think police were telling the truth minus the percentage who said the police were not telling the truth) came to a "significant" -20.

 


During the previous quarter, 25 percent believed the police, 28 percent disbelieved the police, and 45 percent were undecided, for a net opinion of "only" -3.

Net opinion on police truthfulness on the slayings was lowest in Metro Manila at -34 (13 percent  telling the truth, 47 percent not telling the truth,).

In Balance Luzon, it was -31, with 13 percent who believed the police were telling the truth and 44 percent who said they were not telling the truth.

In the Visayas, it was at -15, with 20 percent who said the police were telling the truth and 34 percent who said they were not telling the truth.

In Mindanao, net opinion was at  +3, with 27 percent of respondents who said the police were telling the truth and 24 percent who said they were not telling the truth.

 


The third quarter 2017 Social Weather poll was taken from September 23 to 27 using face-to-face interviews of 1,500 adults nationwide. The poll had sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages; ±4% for Balance Luzon; and ±6% each for Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao.

Net satisfaction among respondents

Among respondents who believed the police where definitely telling the truth on the suspect slayings, net satisfaction (percentage of those satisfied minus percentage of dissatisfied) with President Rodrigo Duterte was an excellent +73.

Among those who believed the police were probably telling the truth, net satisfaction for Duterte was a very good +60.

Among those who said the police were probably not telling the truth, net satisfaction with Duterte was  a good +43. It was a moderate +15 among those who said the police were definitely untruthful.

 


Among the undecideds, Duterte scored a very good +57 net satisfaction rating.

Likewise, net satisfaction with the national administration in general was an excellent +78 among those who said the police were definitely telling the truth, and also a +78 among those who said the police were probably telling the truth.

Among those who believed the police were probably not telling the truth, the administration scored a very good +50, while among the those who definitely disbelieved the police, the government scored a good +30.

Among the undecided, the administration had a very good +65 net satisfaction rating.
