AlDub, Marawi crisis, ASEAN top 2017’s ‘most influential moments’ on Twitter in PHL

It's almost the end of the year and social networking site Twitter has curated the biggest moments in the Philippines, highlighting the rise of the entertainment industry in 2017.

Twitter on Tuesday released its "#ThisHappened in the Philippines in 2017" as it takes a look back on the timeline of Filipinos which was filled with award shows, teleseryes, concerts and even love teams.

"Filipinos share their admiration and support for their idols through Twitter. It became an avenue for individuals to speak their minds, be heard, and inspire change within the community and beyond," Twitter said in a statement.

For 2017, AlDub couple Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards has sparked hundreds of conversations and generated millions of tweets as their fans continue to show their love for the supercouple on Twitter, making them the first among the "Most Tweeted-About Love Teams" in the Philippines.

"Both actors achieved significant milestones this year including their teleseryes 'Destined to be Yours,' Maine's book launch for #YupIAmThatGirl, and the #ADNFestival2017. These events were widely talked about by the AlDub Nation making the AlDub love team, the most talked about couple on the platform," Twitter said.

The pilot episode of AlDub's teleserye "Destined To Be Yours" garnered over 4.6 million tweets, making it the fourth "Most Tweeted Moments in the Philippines" while the AlDub Nation Festival generated over 1.1 million tweets.

'Hottest' Maine

As the AlDub couple continue to prove their power in the local scene, Maine placed fifth as the most tweeted celebrity around the globe, "cementing her status as one of the hottest celebrities on Twitter" while Alden placed second in the Philippine list of most tweeted celebrity.

Other most tweeted moments in the Philippines include the Miss Universe competition which was held at the SM Mall of Asia in January this year. Twitter said the return of Steve Harvey as the pageant host has "piqued the interest" of fans despite the "epic mishap" in 2015.

The UAAP Season 80 ranked as the seventh most tweeted moment in the country as fans cheered for different teams using the hashtag #UAAPSeason80. The UAAP men's basketball match ended on Sunday with the Ateneo Blue Eagles dethroning the De La Salle Green Archers as the UAAP Season 80's champion.

#PrayForMarawi, ASEAN

Meanwhile, the hashtag #PrayForMarawi also topped in the most tweeted moment in the Philippines as Filipinos poured out prayers and messages for the victims and soldiers during the five-month-long urban warfare in Marawi City.

"Filipinos across the country were in deep sympathy as President Rodrigo Duterte placed Mindanao under Martial Law due to invaders," Twitter said.

In November, the visit of world leaders in the Philippines had also generated clamor on social media through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit. Twitter said that some of the biggest highlights during the ASEAN week were the long weekend break, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's visit to Jollibee and US President Donald Trump's arrival with this presidential car called "The Beast."

While the rise of entertainment industry was mostly highlighted in 2017, Twitter said the year "disproves the notion that only celebrities are heard on the platform, in fact, anyone can have a voice to be heard on Twitter."

This year, Twitter selected @ducksonmugs' tweet as the "Golden Tweet of 2017" as it was retweeted over 61,000 times.

"Brevity and wittiness were the secrets behind capturing the attention of the Twitterverse as @ducksonmugs' Tweet features the Filipinos' act of gift giving during Christmas Season - reminding everyone to prepare for the occasion," Twitter said. —ALG, GMA News
