Trillanes files reso seeking probe on Duterte, daughter Sara’s alleged bank accounts

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV formally sought on Monday a Senate investigation into the “possible violation” of the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) by President Rodrigo Duterte and his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

In Senate Resolution No. 602, Trillanes said the probe aims to “promote efficient compliance with the AMLA” and “further improve the said the law.”

“It is the State’s policy to protect the integrity and confidentiality of bank accounts, and ensure that the Philippines is not used as a money-laundering site for proceeds of unlawful activities,” Trillanes said.

Trillanes’ resolution asked the Senate banks committee to conduct the probe.

Trillanes cited the Vera Files report that says Duterte and his daughter, Sara, had at least P100 million in joint deposits and investments that were not disclosed in their Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).

Vera Files said the report was based on documents previously released by Trillanes. The senator had claimed that the documents came from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC).

But in a text message, Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III opposed the probe, saying it would just be a ‘tragic waste of time.’

“Senate is not the body for that. We are part of legislative action. But if this is part of just making this issue land in the news, then this should not be allowed. It will be a tragic waste of time by the Senate,” Pimentel said.

Late last month, Duterte told the media that he is open for any investigation by Congress on reports questioning his wealth.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque had brushed off the allegations of Trillanes, saying: “Lumang tugtugin. Election pa 'yan. Wala na bang bago? Parang sirang plaka.”

During the 2016 campaign period, Trillanes claimed Duterte had P211 million in a joint account with Sara at the Bank of Philippine Islands.

The opposition senator had also accused Duterte of having bank transactions amounting to P2.2 billion from September 2006 to December 2015. — RSJ, GMA News
