Aiza Seguerra mum on reason for resignation, but shares details of meeting with Duterte

Actor and singer Aiza "Ice" Seguerra on Wednesday refused to reveal the reason for his decision to leave his position as the head of the National Youth Commission.

Reports suggest that the reason for his resignation involved issues with bureaucratic red tape, but he told the press that his reasons are "personal" and he seemed determined to keep the details private.

Seguerra's resignation will be effective on April 5 and his appearance as NYC chair at the press conference held by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts will be one of the last.

In an ambush interview with members of the media, Seguerra said that they are now in the "transition" phase.

Private meeting with the President

Although he did not disclose the reason for the resignation, Seguerra, together with his partner, Film Development Council of the Philippines chair Liza Diño, discussed how it happened.

"Ang pinag-usapan namin ... si President ang nagtalaga sa amin sa posisyong ito, nararapat lang na din magpaalam sa kaniya nang maayos ng personal," Diño told the press.

On the day of the meeting, Diño and Seguerra were pleasantly surprised when President Rodrigo Duterte honored their request to keep the conversation confidential.

"May mga cameras n'on — naghihintay kami — pumasok na sila, do'n mo malalaman kasi may ilaw na. Biglang pagpasok niya, ang una niyang sinabi [sa kanila] 'please leave the room'" Seguerra said. "Tatlo lang kami talaga."

Diño and Seguerra were touched by the President's gesture and described him as very fatherly. Further, Seguerra confessed that he was surprised at how emotional he got while speaking with Duterte.

"Hindi ko inasahang maiiyak talaga ako pero — ang cool ko pa e, sabi ko 'love, tingnan mo, ang kalmado ko' — pero siyempre pumasok na siya (Duterte). Sabi ko, 'Sir...mamamaalam na po ako,'" Seguerra shared, mimicking how his voice broke.

Seguerra was appointed by Duterte as NYC chair in August 2016. Serving for a little over two years, he said that leaving wasn't an easy decision to make as he had poured his heart into his work.

"Hindi rin madali sa akin 'yong desisyon, pero kailangang mag-desisyon," he said.

Seguerra said that he will continue to support the NYC's programs even as he spends more time with his family. He further revealed that he plans on releasing new music, perhaps within the year.

As for his successor, Seguerra said that it is entirely the President's prerogative and he does not have any influence in the decision. — RSJ, GMA News
