Sereno on quo warranto case: Good will always win over evil

Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice on-leave Maria Lourdes Sereno on Saturday assured her supporters that she will not lose the quo warranto case.

“Good will always prevail over evil. Evil cannot last,” Sereno said in a forum organized by supporters of the late Senator Miriam Defensor.

She added evil will eventually “implode upon itself.”

She made the statement following calls of several lawmakers and groups who denounced the quo warranto as “illegal” and a “betrayal of justice” and echoed her argument that only through an impeachment proceedings that a chief justice can be ousted.

Fielding questions asked online and on-the-spot, the chief magistrate gave words of encouragement to lawyers and judges asking whether or not there was “hope for the judiciary.”

“Yes, there is hope. That’s why I am fighting this quo warranto petition,” Sereno said.

“Gusto kong ikuwento sana sa taong bayan. That’s why I really have to fight to present the case to the Senate. Because many, many judges are good judges,” she added.

Less than a week before the rumored May 11 vote on the quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida against her, Sereno said she remains hopeful she would be given a chance to defend herself before the Senate should it convene as an impeachment court.

Sereno added that she has and will continue to face accusations and supposed “bullying” to encourage her fellow judges not to show fear.

“Ang kailangan po talaga ay ang mga judges natin, matatapang. Ayun po, kailangan ang mga judges natin ay magpakita ng tapang sa panindigan ang chief justice, kasi ang Chief justice ay magpakita ng takot ay ano na lang po ang mga Justice natin?” she said. —ALG, GMA News
