Noynoy Aquino to skip Duterte's SONA for 3rd time

Former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III will not attend the State of the Nation Address of his successor, President Rodrigo Duterte, on Monday, July 23.

The Inter-Parliamentary Relations and Special Affairs Bureau (IPRSAB) of the House of Representatives confirmed Aquino's non-attendance in a text message to reporters on Monday.

"President Aquino already sent regrets," according to the IPRSAB.

This would be the third time since Aquino stepped down from his post that he would skip Duterte's address to the nation to report the accomplishments of his administration.

Sought for reaction, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the Palace does not mind about it.

“That’s his [Aquino] decision too,” Roque said in a message to reporters.

In a press conference last week, House Secretary General Atty. Cesar Strait Pareja said invitations have already been sent to incumbent and former government officials.

Among those who have confirmed attendance, according to the IPRSAB, are former President Fidel Ramos and former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.

Former Senate Presidents Juan Ponce Enrile, Aquilino "Nene" Pimentel Jr. and Manuel Villar will also be present, as well as former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.

Vice President Leni Robredo will likewise attend Duterte's third SONA.

"Vice President Leni is attending SONA," according to the IPRSAB.

Pareja, in the press conference, said a holding area has been prepared for Robredo in case she attends. —With a report from Virgil Lopez/KG, GMA News
