Ouster plot vs. Alvarez ‘briefly touched’ in House caucus — Gwen Garcia

The reported ouster plot against Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez was briefly touched in the all-member caucus of the House of Representatives on Monday morning, Deputy Speaker Gwen Garcia said.

"It was touched upon very briefly. Yun lang naman," Garcia told reporters in an ambush interview after the caucus.

The caucus was held in order for the House members to discuss the proposed Bangsamoro Organic Law, which they are set to ratify in their session on Monday morning.

However, reports have likewise surfaced that Alvarez will be removed from his post, with former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo reportedly replacing him.

Garcia said it is up to the House members whether they would vote for Alvarez's ouster or not.

"That will all be decided by each of the congressman. If there will be, I'm sure may mag-oobject if there will be a move to oust the Speaker. I guess each congressman will decide for himself or herself," she said.

She noted, however, that support for Alvarez will depend on how his colleagues view his performance as leader of the House.

"I think it is always a question of whether or not things are going well in the House. And we are of one mind. This has really been the most productive Congress yet, and we have to attribute to the leadership," Garcia said.

"It's all about each congressman's take on how the present Congress is being led," she added.

Some lawmakers, on the other hand, are mum about the supposed plot.

In an ambush interview with reporters before the opening of the session, Alvarez's rival and Davao del Norte 2nd District Representative Antonio Floirendo said he only heard about the supposed plot but refused to give additional information.

Majority Leader Rodolfo Farinas, meanwhile, only laughed about the supposed plan.

"You make me laugh," Farinas told reporters in an ambush interview.

For his part, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said a possible change in the House leadership will not affect the two chambers' working relationship.

Malacañang, meanwhile, distanced itself on talks regarding the supposed change in the House leadership, saying it is an internal matter of the chamber. — RSJ, GMA News
