PAGASA issues flood warnings in areas near river basins due Ompong's rains

State weather bureau PAGASA on Saturday issued flood warnings for areas near river basins due to the heavy rains brought by Typhoon Ompong.

PAGASA hydrologist Richard Orendain said that the agency was monitoring the following rivers:

  • Pasig-Marikina-Tullahan River
  • Bicol River
  • Pampanga River
  • Cagayan River
  • Agno River

Orendain said that the water level in Sto. Niño, Marikina had reached critical elevation at 17.13 meters.

"Masyadong malakas yung pagtaas nitong Marikina River dahil hanggang sa ngayon, yung upstream niya...above critical pa rin, napakataas ng tubig dun. Ineexpect nating hanggang hapon lalong tataas yung tubig ng Marikina," Orendain said.

He also said that water from La Mesa Dam, which is on red alert status, passed through the critical Tullahan River.

Areas near Tullahan River are flood-prone especially due to heavy rains, he added.

Flooding is possible in areas near the Bicol River, Pampanga River, and Cagayan River due to the heavy rains.

Dagupan and Urdaneta in Pangasinan are particularly prone to flood due to the Agno River and allied Sinocalan River.

PAGASA also issued general flood warnings in the following regions:

  • Cordillera Administrative Region
  • Ilocos
  • Cagayan Valley
  • Central Luzon
  • Calabarzon
  • Mimaropa
  • Bicol
  • Western Visayas
  • Central Visayas
  • Easter Visayas
  • Zamboanga Peninsula

Orendain said there was a reported flash flood in Zamboanga Peninsula on Friday caused by rains brought by the enhanced Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. -Jessica Bartolome/NB, GMA News
