Youth groups hold protest rally, demand Imelda’s imprisonment

Various youth and student groups on Sunday conducted a protest rally at the People Power Monument in Quezon City against former first lady Imelda Marcos's provisional liberty, granted after she posted P150,000 in bail.

A symbolic warrant of arrest was released by protesters demanding that justice be served.

"The Filipino People hereby demands that Imelda Romualdez Marcos, widow and partner-in-crime of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, be brought to justice, arrested, and imprisoned, " the emblematic warrant said.

It underscored that the "impunity enjoyed by the Marcoses" must come to an end.

"Ferdinand Marcos is buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Imee Marcos is seeking a seat in the Senate. Bongbong Marcos seeks to return to Malacañang. Imelda Marcos remains free despite conviction," it added.

Earlier this month, Imelda Marcos was convicted on seven counts of graft in connection with her financial interests in Swiss-based foundations during her time as Minister of Human Settlements and interim member of Congress when her husband, Ferdinand Marcos was president.

A few hundred protesters were present at the rally chanting "Imelda Iselda," according to Julee Anne Cabrera's report on Super Radyo dzBB.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) put the number of participants at around 500.

Martial law victim Etta Rosales was among those present at the event.

The protest movement was organized by Akbayan Youth, Asean Youth Forum, Liberal Youth, Tindig Kabataan, Millennials PH, and Student Council Alliance of the Philippines. Student groups from various universities also joined.

Sandiganbayan Fifth Division chairperson Associate Justice Rafael Lagos earlier said the Marcos camp will only await two rulings from the Sandiganbayan: either an approval of the motion and its ensuing order compelling Marcos to post a P300,000 bail, or a denial and a warrant of arrest. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
