Inferno in paradise: Fire hits four hectares of Boracay


Fire hit the public market in Boracay on Wednesday afternoon.

All the sections of the four-hectare public market were burned down. A few houses, apartments, and other establishments were also affected by the fire.

According to a report on GMA News TV's News TV Live, the fire started in Talipapa Bukid Public Market in Sitio Manggayat, Barangay Manoc-Manoc at around 3 p.m.

Initial information from the Red Cross indicated five people suffered minor injuries. 

The authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

The razed stalls are considered a major supplier of affordable food, especially among tourists.
 
Investigation showed the fire started at the kitchen of a house of Marcelino Sotto. It was declared under control at 4:50 p.m.

Boracay's land area is a little more than 1,000 hectares.
