Magnitude-7.2 quake in Davao also damaged schools, gov't buildings —NDRRMC


The magnitude-7.2 quake that hit parts of Mindanao early Saturday also damaged schools, a hospital and government buildings.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported on Monday that three schools were totally damaged and seven more were partially damaged in the South Cotabato and General Santos City.

Aside from the totally damaged seaport in Sarangani Province, the quake partially damaged the municipal hall and municipal police station in Glan town.

Also partially damaged in Glan were the warehouse of Pepsi-Cola Philippines and the Philippine Port Authority building.

The NDRRMC also reported that the city hall of General Santos City sustained minor cracks and shattered glass windows. The KCC Mall in the city sustained broken windows and glass doors and cracks on the walls.

Seven sari-sari stores in Barangay Dadiangas South in General Santos City were totally damaged, the agency also reported.

The NDRRMC also reported that a total of five people, including a baby, in South Cotabato and Sarangani Province were injured.

The quake struck at 4:23 a.m. on Saturday. Its epicenter was traced 53 kilometers southwest of Sarangani town in Davao Occidental.

The temblor was felt strongest at Intensity 6 in General Santos Cit, Sarangani town in Davao Occidental and Glan, Sarangani Province.

Intensity 6 is described as "very strong" in the Philippine Institute of Volcanology's Earthquake Intensity Scale.

Many people are frightened; many run outdoors. Some people lose their balance. motorists feel like driving in flat tires. Heavy objects or furniture move or may be shifted. Small church bells may ring. Wall plaster may crack. Very old or poorly built houses and man-made structures are slightly damaged though well-built structures are not affected. Limited rockfalls and rolling boulders occur in hilly to mountainous areas and escarpments. Trees are noticeably shaken.

The quake was also felt at Intensity 5 in:

  • Koronadal City
  • Santa Maria, Jose Abad Santos, Don Marcelino and Balut Island in Davao Occidental
  • Polomolok, Lake Sebu, Sto. Nino and Tupi in South Cotabato
  • Alabel, Malapatan and Palimbag in Sultan Kudarat
  • Kiamba, Sarangani

Intensity 4 in:

  • Davao City
  • Cotabato City
  • Zamboanga City
  • Isabela City
  • Tacurong City

Intensity 3 in:

  • Cagayan De Oro City
  • Maramag and Quezon in Bukidnon
  • Valencia City
  • Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat
  • Nabunturan, Compostela Valley

Intensity 2 in:

  • Kidapawan City
  • Kabacan, Cotabato
  • Digos City
  • Gingoog City
  • Iligan City
  • Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon
  • Matalam, North Cotobato

Intensity 1 in:

  • Kalilangan, Bukidnon
  • Burgos, Surigao del Norte
