Military launches fresh airstrike vs. Maute in Marawi

The Philippine military has once again launched another airstrike in Marawi against extremists who earlier overran the city.

GMA News' Cedric Castillo reported seeing a tandem of OV-10 Broncos, which are American turboprop light attack and observation aircraft, alternately dropping bombs in the city. He also said FA-50 jets were being used for the airstrike.

Castillo also claimed seeing a "white plane" hovering over the area which he said looked like a P-3 Orion, a four-engine turboprop anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft used by the US Navy.

He, however, could not immediately confirm from authorities if the plane he had seen was indeed a P-3 Orion.

Ten soldiers were earlier killed in a friendly fire incident when they were hit by the Philippine Air Force's conventional bomb, not a precision-guided missile.

Clashes between the military and the Maute forces began on May 23 when the terrorists burned buildings in the city.

They also abducted a priest and his parishioners and committed other atrocities. — MDM, GMA News
