Meet the cop who 'defied Science' in Marawi

A police officer from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao - Regional Public Safety Battalion (ARMM-RPSB) has become the talk of the town.

His superiors call him "the man that defied Science" as the bullets that hit him during the intense Marawi siege just grazed his skin, according to a report by GMA News' Raffy Tima on "24 Oras" on Friday.

Police Officer 3 Isah Sangcad has a gauze covering his ankle that was hit by a bullet. He related that the bullet, instead of penetrating his skin broke into pieces upon impact.

"Noong X-ray, ang sabi ng doktor, ano raw ang buto ko... stainless ba daw. Kasi 'yung bullet ang nawasak. Hindi 'yung buto. Nagulat 'yung doktor," Sangcad said.

Another bullet that hit his hand did not penetrate the flesh and was instead lodged in his palm.

"'Yun ang milagro, hindi natin alam. 'Yung nasa taas ang may alam diyan," he added.

Sangcad's  were astonished with what happened.

"Kakaiba pa rin, mangilan-ngilan lang 'yung ganyan. Tawag nga namin sa kanya, the man who defied Science eh. Kasi 'yung mga doktor din nagtataka," said Sr. Supt. Marlon Tayaba of the PNP-ARMM Regional Public Safety Battalion.

Sangcad, who has spent 20 years in the police force, played an important role in the first few days of the Marawi siege.

Sangcad was the lead scout of the Philippine Army as they entered the Islamic City that was besieged by the ISIS-inspired Maute group.

He belongs to the of police force that was accidentally hit and killed by the bomb dropped by an SF260 light attack plane. At the time of the attack, he was not with his unit because he was already wounded.

"Nagpapasalamat ako kay Allah at saka sa May Kapal na ganito ang nangyari sakin... hindi ako namatay, buhay pa," he said.

The PNP regional office is processing the possible award for Sangcad's dedication and bravery.

The police officer, however, still prefers to continue to fight for the country.

"Kung maitakbo ko ito ng malakas, sasabak din ako. Kasi gobyerno tayo, hindi tayo susuko," Sangcad said. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BAP, GMA News
