Suspects in P200-M investment scam in Batangas do 'Walk of Shame'

The couple allegedly responsible for the P200-million investment scam in Tanauan City, Batangas faced their victims and were made to do the “Walk of Shame”, a report on Unang Balita by Mav Gonzales on Friday said.

After days of searching for the suspects, the barangay captain of Natatas in Tanauan surrendered the suspects, Eric Dalisay and his wife Ariane, to the city mayor.

During their confrontation, the victims demanded that the couple give back their money.

The couple claimed they lost the money to someone who also victimized them. However, they failed to provide the name and specific details leading to the alleged swindler.

Tanauan City Mayor Antonio Halili, who has been criticized before for punishing suspects and lawbreakers in his city by making them do the "Walk of Shame", right away granted the wish of the victims to have the couple do the same.

Bearing signs saying “Kaming mag-asawa ay manloloko (scammer)”, Ariane and Eric Dalisay were made to walk around the streets of Tanauan City.

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has previously opposed the city’s Walk of Shame.

Some of the suspects who were paraded on the streets of Tanauan have also filed complaints before the CHR against the local government.

Halili then defended himself, saying the Walk of Shame was just granting the victims’ wishes and was not done to ridicule the couple. He also added that it was a  “public information campaign”.

“This is a public information campaign. The citizens have a right to know,” he said.

The Dalisay couple allegedly took P200 million from their 20 victims who then asked for help from the local government. —Akari Nakano/KG, GMA News
