10 more confirmed dead in Biliran landslides

Ten more bodies were recovered from a village hit by a landslide in Biliran, bringing the total fatalities in the province from tropical cyclone Urduja to 33.

Jun Dacillo, head of the Biliran Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said in a radio interview that 23 more people are still missing.

Dacillo said the fatalities were mostly caused by landslides that hit the province during the onslaught of Urduja.

He said search and retrieval operations are being conducted for the 23 missing people at two sites, in Barangay Lucsoon in Naval town and in Caibiran town.

The retrieval of the 10 additional bodies in Biliran is expected to bring the official death toll from Urduja to 41.

Malacañang reported on Monday that the confirmed number of fatalities was 31 and 49 missing.

Based on the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council's (NDRRMC) report on Urduja's effects on Monday morning, a total of 92,613 people have been displaced due to floods and landslide caused by heavy rains brought on by Urduja.

Majority of the displaced victims are residents of Eastern Samar.

A total of 248,790 people in Bicol, Esatern Visyas, Central Visayas, Western Visayas and Caraga were affected by the cyclone, the NDRRMC said. —ALG GMA News
