Gadget fails to detect signs of life on 3rd day of rescue ops in Naga, Cebu

Equipment that can detect breathing failed to find signs of life under the landslide that hit Naga City, Cebu last week.

According to a 24 Oras report by Sandra Aguinaldo, a team from the Office of Civil Defense has been using the equipment for three days.

"Basta merong void spaces at pwedeng panggalingan ng hangin from mula sa taas papunta sa ano ng victim. But normally kapag landslide, kapag ganito katagal na, small chances na 'yung survival ng mga victim," said Technical Search team leader Hector Reyes.

He said the team has identified the residences that were buried by the landslide.

"Ang kagandahan noon using our GPS and the assistance of UP Cebu, inano namin 'yung ano GPS or exact locations ng mga houses buried by landslide," he said.

Over 40 people were killed in the landslide that struck a quarrying site in Barangay Tinaan.

According to Naga City Mayor Kristine Vanessa Chiong, the site of the deadly incident was never described as landslide-prone by experts, even following an inspection conducted by Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region 7.

Chiong said search and rescue operations for possible survivors will continue for two to three more days. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BM, GMA News
