Ipinagbabawal ng pamahalaan ang pagbebenta ng aabot sa 71 cosmetic products matapos makitaan ang mga ito ng "highly toxic" levels ng mercury, ayon sa Food and Drug Administration noong Lunes. Ayon sa FDA, ang mga naturang produkto ay naglalaman ng mercury na mahigit sa "allowable level" na 1 part per million (ppm) o one milligram per kilo. "Local government units and enforcement agencies are deputized to apprehend vendors or outlets found selling the said highly toxic cosmetic products to prevent further exposure of consumers and to protect the environment. The LGU and enforcement agencies shall coordinate with the FDA upon apprehension," ayon kay acting director Kenneth Hartigan-Go. Pinayuhan din ang publiko na ipagbigay-alam sa nga awtoridad kung makabili sila ng mga naturang produkto. Maaaring tawagan ang FDA sa 807-8275 at 809-5596. Inilabas ang memo ni Hartigan-Go noong Nobyembre 28, pero noong Lunes lamang ito lumabas sa website ng FDA. Ilan sa mga masasamang epekto ng ng mercury sa katawan ay ang mga sumusunod: kidney damage, skin rashes, skin discoloration at scarring. Humihina rin ang resistensya ng balat laban sa bacterial at fungal infections dahil sa patuloy na paggamit ng produktong may mercury. Iba pang epekto nito ay anxiety, depression o psychosis at peripheral neuropathy. "The transfer of mercury to fetuses of pregnant women may manifest as neurodevelopment deficits later in life," sabi ni Hartigan-Go. Ang pagka-expose naman sa mataas na lebel ng mercury ay maaaring magkaroon ng gastroenteritis, burning mouth pain, salivation, abdominal pain, vomiting, colitis, nephrosis, anuria o uremia. Nagbabala rin si Hartigan-Go na maaaring makarating sa katawan ng tubig ang mercury na galing sa mga cosmetic product, at maka-kontamina sa food chain kapag sumalin sa mga isda at ibang lamang-tubig.
