Algieri will surely knock out Pacquiao, say American's trainers

MACAU — Three days before the biggest, and richest, fight of their career, the handlers of Chris Algieri made a pronouncement that moved the tectonic plates of professional boxing.

Tim Lane and Keith Tremble graced the press conference Wednesday night to announce that their ward will surely knock the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown off the head of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao when they clash in a scheduled 12-round bout on Sunday at Cotai Arena inside The Venetian here.

Lane, who was Algieri's sparring partner before being promoted as trainer, said that although Pacquiao is a ring legend and a great champion, his reign will formally come to an end when he battles his 30-year old ward, who remains undefeated in 20 fights.

He said Algieri has what it takes to become a champion, much to the surprise of close to a hundred journalists who witnessed the press briefing in a packed ballroom.

“On Saturday night, the passing continues and we’ll gonna see a new champion and a new star in the division,” said Lane, beaming with confidence over the chances of his ward whom he earlier branded as the "golden boy" of professional boxing.

Trimble, on the other hand, said he knew Algieri has a special talent, somebody who is capable of pulling off an earth-shaking upset.

"On November 23, Chris Algieri will become victorious again and will become the new WBO welterweight champion,” Trimble said as he threw a glance at Algieri, who looked nervous in his coat and tie despite standing to have a payday of close to $1 million.

Fight observers claim that Algieri is still quite raw compared to a legitimate ring matador such as Pacquiao.

In fact, despite surviving Russian slugger Ruslan Provodnikov, they note that Algieri still doesn't possess the kind of attack that could reduce Pacquiao into a bloody pulp.

Freddie Roach also poured more gas into the flame, saying that Algieri will surely struggle come fight day as he still looks big for the to beat the 144-pound catchweight with only a couple of days left before the official weigh-in.

"I don't think he can make it," said Roach before presiding over Pacquiao's final workout.

"He looks big for 144. And should he decides to trim off that extra pound to make the weight, he will surely struggle and will climb the ring with no power at all. I really don't think he will survive round number one.

"It will be very difficult for him. Manny is going to come and get him." — STR/JST, GMA News
