Pacquiao rates performance vs Algieri as '7,' wants to be at '10' vs Mayweather

HONG KONG — Manny Pacquiao vowed to be at his best when he battles Floyd Mayweather in a dream showdown that would go down as the biggest and the richest match in the history of professional boxing.

Pacquiao, an eight-division champion, stressed that Mayweather will be a tough assignment so he has to do what he failed to do when he dominated Chris Algieri in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title match last Sunday at the Cotai Arena inside The Venetian Macao.

Pacquiao clobbered Algieri from start to finish, destroying his inexperienced foe with great boxing skills and a flurry of punches that knocked him down six times.

Although the much-anticipated knockout didn't come, Pacquiao sent a strong message that his old power, his old hunger and intensity are back.

But the Filipino ring idol downplayed his performance, saying that he still has a lot to show.

And he is reserving it for his clash with Mayweather -- the fight the entire world wants to see.

"I will rate my performance against Algieri as seven," said Pacquiao moments after boarding one of the two chartered flights to Gen. Santos City last Monday.

"But if I'm going to fight Mayweather, I have to be at my best. I have to show my nine or 10 against him in order to win."

Pacquiao added that he will come up with a better training regimen to counter Mayweather's impecable defense, crafty attacks and, of course, some dirty ring tactics that made him a five-division world champion.

"More on plyometrics dapat," Pacquiao said. "Alam naman natin na malakas din yung Mayweather."

Pacquiao added that he is willing to fight Mayweather in any weight division that will not go above 150 pounds.

"Masyado nang mataas ang 150," he said. "Kahit kain na ako ng kain, hanggang 143 pa din lang talaga ako. 135 naman talaga ako eh. Umakyat lang ako sa 143 para madaming makalaban."  — STR/JST, GMA News
