Algieri went down many times because he feared Pacquiao's power, Roach says

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach continued to fire shots at Chris Algieri even after his top pupil Manny Pacquiao won by a lopsided unanimous decision this past weekend.

Speaking to Boxingscene.com, Roach said he Algieri ending the fight on his feet even after six official knockdowns was not something to be proud of.

"I wasn't really impressed with him getting off the canvas. He was hurt once really bad I thought, and the referee almost stopped the fight," said Roach.

"The rest were really like flash knockdowns. I think they were choices."

It was Algieri's first time fighting in front of the world stage against an elite fighter like Pacquiao. Other than the Filipino's power, Roach also thinks that the knockdowns scored were a product of Algieri's stage fright.

"I don't think he really went down because of the punch. He was just so scared of Manny," Roach quipped.

"He just didn't belong there. He didn't belong in the ring with Manny Pacquiao." — JST, GMA News
