Donations for 'Sendong' victims from abroad rise to $19M

Donations from abroad for victims of Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) continued to pour in, totalng $19.272 million as of Wednesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. In a news release posted on its website, the DFA said the donations and pledges from abroad now amount to $19,272,349.17.

"The amount includes those from Filipino communities, Philippine Embassies and Consulates General around the world and private individuals/groups. It does not include donations or pledges without equivalent monetary value, or those given to the United Nations flash appeal," the DFA said. In mid-December last year, floods spawned by Sendong devastated parts of Mindanao and the Visayas, leaving more than 1,000 people dead and more than P1 billion in damage to property. Although classified as "weak" by the country's weather bureau's standards, the Manila Observatory noted that Sendong ranked among the most destructive tropical cyclones in Philippine recorded history, including Uring (1991, Ormoc), Pepeng (2009, northern Luzon), Juaning (2011, Bicol) and Ondoy (2009, Metro Manila).  Donors, amount, additional assistance
