PEP EXCLUSIVE: Ang Babae sa Septic Tank is not shortlisted in the Best Foreign Language category of the 84th Academy Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has already chosen the nine films that have a chance to win the coveted Oscar trophy. The nine chosen films are:
Bullhead (Belgium),
Monsieur Lazhar (Canada),
Super Clasico (Denmark),
Pina (Germany),
A Separation (Iran),
Footnote (Israel),
Omar Killed Me (Morocco),
In Darkness (Poland), and
Warriors of the Rainbow: Seedinq Bale (Taiwan). The list will further be trimmed to five entries, which will be revealed on January 24. Even if the Philippines' entry was not able to make the cut at the Oscars, the lead star of
Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank, Eugene Domingo, points out that their independently-produced film was able to generate positive feedback among AMPAS members. In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) via Facebook earlier Thursday, January 19, Eugene said: "Yes we did not get the Oscar nomination slot. "But the reactions of the members who have [seen] it have always been positive and Atty. Joji [Alonso, producer of the film] and I were able to enjoy a field trip in the AMPAS building. "It was a treat when we went to Los Angeles. Unforgettable!" What lessons did she learn while campaigning for
Ang Babae sa Septic Tank in the United States? "Gawa lang ng gawa. "Everybody should be inspired and should be encouraged to explore. "The Oscars is a very big dream, but it's just one of the big dreams for Philippine cinema. "We can all start from within. We can all improve our own while exposing ourselves to other culture. "Never stop dreaming."
Ang Babae sa Septic Tank is a satirical film that pokes fun at independent filmmaking. Aside from Eugene, the film stars JM de Guzman, Kean Cipriano, Cai Cortez, Cherry Pie Picache, and Mercedes Cabral.
NOMINATION IN ASIAN FILM AWARDS. Even if
Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank was unable to make the cut at the Oscars, Eugene was able to bring honor to the country with her nomination as Best Actress in the 6th Asian Film Awards. Eugene was cited for her performance in
Ang Babae sa Septic Tank, which debuted at the Cinemalaya film festival last year. Still at the 6th Asian Film Awards, Chris Martinez was nominated in the Best Screenwriter category, also for
Ang Babae sa Septic Tank. And Shamaine Buencamino was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the film Niño. Eugene admits that she cried when she learned that she had been nominated. "Naiiyak lang ako kasi nagiging sentimental ako about many things, especially when my friends, my colleagues, my seniors, my teachers, the people I work with, and even the people I don't see, but follow me somehow and congratulate me. "And to see their faces being very, very happy and proud about what I have done makes me want to cry. "This work, our business is not easy. "When you feel you are already tired and ready to say I'm done, here comes an affirmation from heaven I'm quite certain...that 'Yes, maybe you are doing well so carry on!'" Eugene feels blessed to be nominated in the Asian Film Awards, which will take place in Hong Kong on March 19. "I did not expect to be nominated at all in the ASIAN OSCARS, as you say. It's actually the ASIAN FILM AWARDS. "But early on, I was invited to be a presenter, so with that, I was already privileged, then comes the nomination. "I feel happy about it and direk Marlon Rivera is coming with us in Hong Kong. "And we already planning a celebration, even if we don't get the trophy. "The point is, everything after Septic Tank, after the last shooting day, last summer, is already a fiesta! "We are so fulfilled already and actually ready to move on. "We are talking of new projects, in fact."
KIMMY DORA AND THE TEMPLE OF KYEME. One of Eugene's upcoming projects is
Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kyeme, the sequel to her blockbuster launching movie,
Kimmy Dora (2009). She excitedly revealed that they will go to South Korea next week to shoot major scenes in temples there. "Again, this is written by Chris Martinez," she says about the talented writer-director. "He has written a bigger, funnier, and more family-oriented screenplay that I'm quite certain all ages will love. "We have waited for two years and, I tell you, it's worth the wait. "Manny Pangilinan said he is attending Kimmy Go Dong Hae's launching event, so wait for that in the movie!" Eugene also mentioned that the filmmakers have plans of inviting Gretchen Barretto to do a cameo in the movie. --
