AFP, PNP still on full alert in Visayas region

The security forces in Central Visayas remained on full alert following the arrest of suspected Abu Sayyaf member Renoor Lou Dongon and his alleged lover Supt. Maria Cristina Nobleza.

"The PNP (Philippine National Police), with the full support of the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), will remain to be on the full alert to ensure the well-being of people in the Visayas region and the visitors who enjoy the splendid sceneries of our famous tourist destinations," the PNP Central Visayas and the AFP Central Command said in a joint statement released on Wednesday.

"Rest assured that the security measures to prevent the incursion of lawless armed group in the Visayas region have been instituted and strengthened."

The security personnel also thanked the public for their help and support that led to the arrest of Nobleza and Dongon.

"The support and cooperation that the government forces are receiving from the public is indispensable in the neutralization of Abu Sayyaf members who entered Inabanga, Bohol last April 11, 2017 and the arrest of their cohorts," they said.

"With this development, the combined forces of AFP and PNP are even motivated to finish the job and finally arrest the remaining ASG members who are now in the run for their lives. With their capabilities significantly diminished in leadership and in resources, they no longer pose a threat in Central Visayas," the security forces said.

The PNP and the AFP also urged the public to relay any relevant information about the local terrorist group in the nearest police station or military unit.

They also advised the public to remain calm and stay vigilant.

Nobleza and Dongon were arrested Saturday after attempting to drive past a checkpoint in Barangay Bacani in Clarin town, Bohol province.

Authorities later found out that they were reportedly trying to assist Abu Sayyaf members being pursued by government troops. — BAP, GMA News
