Some Sony Xperia models to get Jelly Bean in 2013

Users of ten models of Sony's Xperia smartphones can expect a software upgrade to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) starting 2013.

In a blog post, Sony said the first models to get the upgrade will be the Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V models.

"These smartphones will start to receive Jelly Bean during February and March," it said.

Next on the list are the Xperia P, Xperia J and Xperia, which will be upgraded from the end of March.

The third batch includes Xperia S, Xperia SL, Xperia ion and Xperia acro S "in the subsequent weeks," Sony said.

But four models will not get the upgrade: Xperia U, Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, and Xperia sola, which are currently running Android 4.0.

"We’re particularly excited about the Sony Xperia Jelly Bean features and functionality – we look forward to bringing you more information on this in the New Year," Sony said.

A separate article on The Next Web quoted a Sony rep who said the quality of Xperia’s software experience depends on factors including: screen resolution, hardware platform and RAM.

"Unfortunately, in the case of Xperia tipo, Xperia miro, Xperia U and Xperia sola this wasn’t the case – so we made the decision to keep them on Ice Cream Sandwich," it quoted the Sony rep as saying.

He also said that after thorough evaluation, Sony concluded that the user experience for its 2011 Xperia smartphones will be superior "if they remain on Ice Cream Sandwich versus being upgraded to Jelly Bean." — TJD, GMA News
