Google: Gmail compose window change now permanent

On Wednesday (PHL time), Google made permanent the new compose window in favor of the old "full screen" one, though it also offers an alternative close to it.

"A few weeks ago we added ... a full-screen option to the new compose. Now that that option is available, we're saying farewell to the old compose and switching everyone to the new compose over the next few days," Google said in a Google+ post.

However, Gmail users who still want a full-screen compose experience have an alternative: they can click on the expand button in the top right of the new compose window.

They can then "set it as the default by selecting Default to full-screen in the more options menu in the bottom right."

Otherwise, the new compose window opens draft emails as a minimizable window.

Google said this is so "you can write multiple drafts at once, keep an eye on incoming email, adds support for inline images and much more."

A separate article on The Next Web said the new compose window was introduced in October 2012.

"There was quite a bit of backlash at the beginning, but the uproar increased significantly in March when Google turned Gmail’s new compose on by default for everyone," it said. — ELR, GMA News
