Signal No. 2 over Isabela as Ompong barrels toward northern Luzon


Typhoon Ompong continues to threaten northern Luzon, PAGASA reported in Severe Weather Bulletin No. 6 issued late Thursday evening.

At 10 p.m., the eye Ompong was located at 740 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon or 485 kilometers east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 255 kph, moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour.

Ompong  is expected to make landfall in Cagayan-Isabela area early morning on Saturday, September 15.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) No. 2 has been raised over Isabela province while TCWS No. 1 was raised over the following areas:

  • Batanes
  • Cagayan including Babuyan group of Islands
  • Apayao
  • Abra
  • Kalinga
  • Mountain Province
  • Ifugao
  • Benguet
  • Pangasinan
  • La Union
  • Ilocos Norte
  • Ilocos Sur
  • Quirino
  • Nueva Vizcaya
  • Nueva Ecija
  • Bulacan
  • Rizal
  • Metro Manila
  • Cavite
  • Batangas
  • Laguna
  • Quezon including Polillo Island
  • Northern Occidental Mindoro including Lubang Island
  • Northern Oriental Mindoro
  • Masbate
  • Marinduque
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Catanduanes
  • Albay
  • Sorsogon
  • Burias and Ticao Island
  • Northern Samar

The state weather bureau said occasional rains and gusty winds will be experienced over the areas under TCWS No. 1 within the next 36 hours.

Moderate to occasionally heavy rains due to southwest monsoon over Palawan, Zamboanga Peninsula and Visayas on Friday, September 14. The weather condition will prevail in these areas until Saturday, September 15.

An advisory was issued for fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts not to venture out over the seaboards of areas under TCWS No. 1, the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and of Mindanao.

The state weather bureau advised the public and the disaster risk reduction and management council concerned to take appropriate actions and watch for the next Severe Weather Bulletin to be issued at 5 am on Friday. — BAP, GMA News
