3-6 METER HIGH STORM SURGES EXPECTED

Typhoon Ompong makes landfall over Baggao, Cagayan


Weather service PAGASA reported that Typhoon Ompong (international name Mangkhut) made landfall over Baggao, Cagayan, at 1:40 a.m.-Saturday.

At 1 a.m., Ompong was 90 kilometers east-northeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, with 205 kilometer per hour winds which could gust up to 285 kph.

 

 

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 4 remained raised over:

  • Ilocos Norte,
  • Cagayan,
  • northern Isabela,
  • Apayao,
  • Abra,
  • Kalinga, and
  • the Babuyan Islands.

These areas would experience 171-220 kph winds, and storm surges between two to three meters high, except for Cagayan and Ilocos Norte which may experience an extremely dangerous storm surge of six meters, and Isabela which may experience a 3 meter high surge.

Furthermore, open sea wave heights along areas under Signal 4 could be higher than 14 meters.

Signal No. 3 was meanwhile raised over:

  • Batanes,
  • southern Isabela,
  • Ilocos Sur,
  • La Union,
  • Mountain Province,
  • Benguet,
  • Ifugao,
  • Nueva Vizcaya,
  • Quirino, and
  • northern Aurora.

These areas would experience 121 -170 kph winds, and open sea wave heights of more than 14 meters. A two meter high storm surge was likely over Ilocos Sur and La Union, while a meter high surge was expected over the rest of the provinces under Signal 3.

Signal No. 2 was meanwhile up over:

  • Pangasinan,
  • Tarlac,
  • Nueva Ecija,
  • southern Aurora,
  • Zambales,
  • Pampanga,
  • Bulacan, and
  • northern Quezon including Polillo Island.

These areas could expect 61-120 kph winds, 4.1- 14 meter high open sea wave heights, and a meter high storm surge, except in Pangasinan where a two-meter high surge was likely.

Signal 1 was also up over:

  • Bataan,
  • Rizal,
  • Metro Manila,
  • Cavite,
  • Batangas,
  • Laguna,
  • the rest of Quezon,
  • Lubang Island,
  • Marinduque,
  • Camarines Norte,
  • Camarines Sur,
  • Catanduanes,
  • Albay, and
  • Burias Island.

These areas could expect 30-60 kph winds, and open sea wave heights of 1.25 to four meters.

Ompong was moving west-northwest at 35 kph, and would likely be 365 kms west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, by Saturday evening. — DVM, GMA News
