Terrence Romeo slams fellow players who called Gilas fight 'embarrassing'

The brawl that happened during the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying game between the Philippines and Australia was long over, but Terrence Romeo remained in a fighting mood on social media on Monday night.

The Gilas Pilipinas guard was among nine Philippine players ejected from the melee, which had gone viral on social media drawing all sorts of reactions.

Former Gilas captain Jimmy Alapag as well as several PBA players, including Chris Ross and Sol Mercado, called out the incident.

While not replying to anyone directly, Romeo didn't take too kindly to criticism from fellow players.

"Dun sa mga kapwa namin players na nag sasabing embarassing kami wala kaming paki alam sa inyo . Kami mag kaka teammate sa loob kailangan namin mag tulungan. Hindi namin pwede pabayaan yung isat isa. Kung embarassing kami sa mata niyo bat di kayo mag convert ng australian," he wrote.

The melee happened at the 4:01 mark of the third quarter with Australia, 79-48, in control when Gilas Pilipinas guard Roger Pogoy and Boomers wingman Chris Goulding got tangled up on a drive.

Australia big man Daniel Kickert responded with a forearm on Pogoy, after which Jayson Castro hit Kickert. All hell broke loose after that, with both teams getting in on the action.

The referee returned to the court some 40 minutes after the brawl started and announced the ejection of nine Gilas players and four Australian players.

Only three players — June Mar Fajardo, Gabe Norwood, and Baser Amer — remained available to finish the game.

Fajardo and Norwood committed intentional fouls to get disqualified, forcing the referees to award the game to Australia, 89-53, at the 1:57 mark of the third period. —JST, GMA News
