New DLSU Green Archers head coach Louie Gonzales can now breathe easily after steering the Taft-based squad to its first win in UAAP Season 81, 80-76, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

"Going to the game, hindi ko talaga alam kung anong iisipin kong preparasyon ng NU kasi knowing Jamike (Jarin, NU head coach), alam ko marami siyang ibabato talaga," Gonzales said on their win against NU.

He then praised his praised his players for sticking with each other throughout the game.

"Good thing itong mga players ko, they don't mind what's happening inside. They just stick it out with each other kasi ['yun] ang pini-preach ko na mahalagang ma-achieve namin ngayon eh. Kailangan muna namin ma-overcome sarili namin, saka lang kami mag-compete," he added.

Asked about his thoughts on his first win as UAAP head coach, Gonzales said it's all part of the job.

"Sa akin, trabaho lang po. Trabaho lang. It's more on my responsibility to the players, to the community, and to the managers. I don't see it as a first win ko as a coach. Sa akin, it's my responsibility. Siyempre masaya, pero after that, alam ko it's my responsibility," he said.

Gonzales was appointed head coach of the Archers after former head coach Aldin Ayo transferred to UST early this year.

For him, getting the win is also a sigh of relief, especially with how competitive the teams are this season.

"Oo naman, especially pag nakita mo standings. Kumbaga lahat ngayon, halos even e. This makes it more interesting. Sinasabi naman talaga natin nung start pa lang ng UAAP na bakbakan lahat ng teams. You can't count out any team here," he added.

After the win against NU, the green-and-white squad will shift their attention to the UE Red Warriors, the team they will play on Sunday.

"We take one game at a time naman. Tomorrow, bagong focus naman which is UE,"  La Salle guard Aljun Melecio said. — BAP, GMA News
