Team Ancajas looks to impress in Oakland, hopes to land unification fight with Rungvisai

Reigning IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is working doubly hard in training as he aims to showcase a memorable performance in his sixth title defense against Alejandro Santiago Barrios of Mexico on September 28 (September 29 PHL time) at Oracle Arena in Oakland.

Ancajas, 22, is coming off a dominant victory over fellow Filipino Jonas Sultan this past May.

And though the champ won at least ten rounds of their twelve-round contest, Team Ancajas isn't exactly satisfied with his previous outing.

"We weren't satisfied with his physical condition in his last fight because his explosiveness and aggression were not there," said Ancajas' trainer and manager, Joven Jimenez.

"That's what we want to see in his next fight so we're training really hard and did lots of adjustments for the upcoming bout. We do not look for a knockout when we train, but if the opportunity presents itself then we go for it. When we prepare we always prepare to go full twelve rounds."

Team Ancajas is not looking past their upcoming foe, but the team admits they're hoping to land a unification fight against The RING and WBC world super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who also previously expressed his willingness to face the Filipino champion.

"We will let our matchmaker Sean Gibbons and our promoter Top Rank negotiate a possible showdown against the lineal super flyweight champ Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. But for us, we really want to face Rungvisai. Should Jerwin emerge victorious in his next fight then we'll focus on a possible fight against Rungvisai," said Jimenez.

"Jerwin is more mobile than Rungvisai, he has lateral movement and I feel that's our advantage. I also feel that Jerwin is physically bigger than him in this division. In terms of Rungvisai being a lefty, Jerwin actually prefers fighting lefties because he won't have a hard time shooting his jab. A lefty would be a perfect match for Jerwin." — BAP, GMA News
