UAAP: UST vs NU preview and live-scoring (round 2)

First round meeting: The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers held the National University Bulldogs to just 11 fourth quarter points to pull off an epic comeback win, 77-71, last July 28. The Bulldogs looked to be in complete control, with Emmanuel Mbe scoring in transition to give his side a 10-point lead, 55-45, with 4:27 left in the third quarter. An 8-0 blast by UST had them within two points, but starters Denice Villamor and Gelo Alolino scored five unanswered to close the period, 60-53. Then at the start of the fourth, Jeoffrey Javillonar connected on a triple to make the UST deficit 10 once more. But that was the last hurrah of the host school, as UST exploded for a 22-6 run that swung things in their favor, 75-69 with 1:05 left. Charities by Troy Rosario made it a four-point game with less than a minute remaining, but Clark Bautista closed things out with free throws of his own to hand the Bulldogs their second loss of season 75. Bobby Ray Parks waxed hot at the start with 20 points by the intermission, but he was held to just five from that point on. Conversely, Jeric Teng came up big with two well-timed fourth quarter treys that helped his side overhaul the game. Key stats: The Tigers' reliance on perimeter points turned out to be their undoing versus FEU. They get 28.8 points from the perimeter and shoot 28.9 percent from outside the arc, but a bad shooting day can definitely do them in. That said, they average 16.1 assists and regularly get 11.4 second-chance points, two aspects of their game that can bail them out should their slump continue. The run-and-gun Bulldogs norm 13.4 fast break points, which helps boost their points in the paint to 35 per game, 74.8 points per game overall. They're also one of the best rebounding teams in the league with 49 per game, but they have a tendency to settle for the outside shot. They've taken more triples than any other team in the league, 198, despite the fact that they're shooting only 24.2 percent from downtown. UST needs to: Establish Karim Abdul versus Emmanuel Mbe early and often, possibly get Mbe into foul trouble, which will help open up things down low. Versus FEU, the Tigers settled for perimeter jumpers early on, but if their shots are not falling, they need to go down to Abdul or get someone going to the basket. NU needs to: Learn how to manage leads. They had comfortable advantages versus UST in round one and versus Adamson in their previous game, and lost both (though they won in OT versus AdU).
