UAAP: UE vs FEU preview and live-scoring (round 2)

First round meeting: It took a quarter before FEU began firing on all cylinders but once they did, the result was a dominant 92-66 display of offense against the hapless University of the East Red Warriors, last July 29 at the SM MOA Arena, in the 75th season of the UAAP. The Red Warriors were primed for an upset, doubling FEU's offense in an 18-9 run to start the first quarter, but the Tams began to come together by the end of the period, stringing together five unanswered to trail by just four, 18-14, after the first period. A 12-3 run by FEU entering the break had it at 42-29 for the Tamaraws as triples by the Tamaraws' backcourt buried UE. Another trey by RR Garcia began the third period, but five from UE made it a more manageable 11-point deficit, 45-34, 7:39 left in the third. Far Eastern countered with another big run to go up by 19, 57-38. Six straight UE points showed that the Warriors still had some fight left in them, but Romeo caught fire in the fourth period for 10 points. His jumper with 3:45 left in the game had it at 80-55, and the FEU reserves closed out the game from that point on. Key stats: FEU was in fine form versus UE. Their two guards, Romeo and Garcia, had 19 and 18 points respectively, as both played 31-minute stints. Backing them up were their two starting big men, as Anthony Hargrove and Arvie Bringas each scored 11 more. UE in contrast got points from Chris Javier and Roi Sumang, as the UE one-two punch combined for 36 points. JR Sumido added 10 more, but no one else could bolster their firepower, with their next top scorer, Pedrito Galanza, managing just five markers. FEU scored the majority of their points through their running game, getting out to 14 transition attempts which resulted in 21 points. The Tams also went 7-of-22 from beyond the arc, and 17-for-27 from the line. UE's numbers pale in comparison: 12 fast break points, 4-of-16 shooting from three-point territory, and 10-of-16 shooting from the foul line. Still, it's safe to say that FEU will not be overlooking UE when these two teams clash, especially after the Red Warriors managed to top the defending champion Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles last Thursday. Under interim head coach Boysie Zamar, UE's starters have been giving the team a ton of punch, which ought to worry an FEU squad that will miss Arvie Bringas (suspension) and Cris Tolomia (injury). UE needs to: Get their up-tempo game going, replicating their success against Ateneo, when they got 16 fast break points and 23 turnover points. If UE can keep the ball out of the hands of Garcia and Romeo, this FEU squad could struggle to put points on the board. FEU needs to: Play within their system and not let external factors get into their heads. They'll no doubt be aching to release some steam after the UAAP ruled that they needed to play a rematch of their second round game against NU, but if they start jacking up contested shots and arguing every call, they could be UE's third win in a row.
