Pinoy jins bag PHL’s 1st taekwondo gold in 2017 SEA Games


The Philippines earned its first gold medal in taekwondo at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday.

During the opening day of the SEA Games Taekwondo, the Philippine men's team — composed of Dustin Jacob Mella, Raphael Enrico Mella and Rodolfo Reyes Jr — emerged on top of the Poomsae category, beating Malaysia (silver) and Vietnam (bronze).

The Philippine women's team, meanwhile, settled for a bronze medal in Poomsae.

Earlier in the day, Reyes  had managed to get a bronze medal in the Men's Individual Poomsae.

Also bagging medals for the Philippines on Saturday are:

  • Philippine team (silver) — Lawn bowls - Men's Pairs
  • Mark Griffin (bronze) — Wakeboard - Men's Individual
  • Philippine team (silver) — Equestrian - Show Jumping Team
  • Anna Clarice Patrimonio (silver) — Tennis - Women's Singles
  • Clinton Kingsley Bautista (bronze) — Athletics - Men's 110m Hurdle
  • Daniel Patrick Caluag (bronze) — Cycling - Men's BMX
  • Philippine team (bronze) — Lawn Bowls - Women's Pairs

The Philippines now has 16 gold, 24 silver, and 40 bronze medals, for a total of 80 medals. The country remains in sixth place in a multi-event games of 11 countries. — MDM, GMA News
