PFL 2018: Ceres Negros FC regains top spot after besting Davao Aguilas

Home team Ceres Negros Football Club (FC) has regained the top spot in this year’s Philippine Football League (PFL) after shutting down visiting Davao Aguilas FC in a 3-0 match held at Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City Wednesday night.

Ceres Negros FC dominated the game by scoring one in the last minute of the first half via free kick from OJ Porteria.

The team was able to triple the lead after man of the match Bienvenido Marañon scored twice in the second half.

Ceres Negros Assistant Coach Ian Treyes, in a post-match press conference, said each of their players, during the half time, tried to “wake up” each other in order not to give the game to opponent Davao Aguilas.

Treyes said the team has worked hard for the game and everyone was challenged to play better and harder.

“Each one was eager to win. The attacks came on and hopefully we can continue on this one,” he said, adding that they hope to have good rest as the team prepares for its next match against Stallions Laguna on Saturday.

Marañon, for his part, said it was somehow hard for the team since it just came back from last week’s AFC Cup game against Yangon United in Myanmar, while Davao Aguilas was definitely a conditioned team.

“But we came strong,” Marañon said, adding that “we got more of the goals in the second half thus, we showed to them how we can play in Panaad.”

Davao Aguilas’ Coach Marlon Maro said they have quality players in the team.

“However, we had our opportunities to score yet missed to continue. Ceres also has opportunity to score and they were able to deliver,” he said, adding that “defensive lapses happen and we will just have to make sure to convert our chances next time.”

After winning against Davao, Ceres Negros FC now has a total of 18 points placing it at the top of PFL 2018 standing. The team is the reigning champion of the league. — LA, GMA News
