(Updated 8:19 pm) Barangay Ginebra San Miguel escaped with a 101-100 win over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum as Mac Baracael made three pressure-packed free throws with 0.3 seconds left in the game.

“It was a hard win. We were just lucky that the referee called a foul,” said Ginebra head coach Ato Agustin. “Di kami nawalan ng pag-asa dun sa last two seconds.”

Barangay Ginebra tied their 2013 Commissioner's Cup foes Alaska in the standings, with both teams possessing 3-4 records. Rain or Shine had to settle for a tie for fourth with Barako Bull, thanks to their 4-4 cards.

The Elasto Painters thought they had the win and a share of the second-spot after Arizona Reid made a difficult jumper over Dior Lowhorn with two seconds left in the game. However, Beau Belga was whistled for a foul on Baracael’s prayer to swing the tide to the Barangay's favor. Belga’s last attempt to salvage the game then came too late as there was no more time left on the clock.

Mark Caguioa exploded for 32 points in the game with eight rebounds and four assists, but it was Ginebra import Dior Lowhorn who carried the offense in the fourth quarter for Ginebra, scoring 14 points in the final 12 minutes. Lowhorn totaled 31 points and nine rebounds on an efficient 11-of-20 shooting clip from the field.

“We will write a letter to the Commissioner for formally put this game under protest,” said ROS owner Raymond Yu. “The referee decided the outcome of the game.”

The first part of the complaint was the foul called on Belga, as it appeared like Baracael was the one who extended his off arm to attract the contact. Another complaint was that there should have been more time left on the clock as the foul happened with at least one second left in the game.

The Elasto Painters raced to a 15-2 run early in the first quarter. However, Mark Caguioa was hell-bent on making up for his bad performance in their last game. After failing to score a single field goal against San Mig Coffee in their last outing, Caguioa poured in five baskets in the first quarter. With their main man running on all cylinders, the Barangay fought back to trim the deficit down to five at 26-21 to end the first quarter.

A Caguioa triple kept Ginebra within five at the 8:22 mark of second quarter, 35-30. LA Tenorio then followed up with another three on the next play to further cut the Rain or Shine lead down.

Ginebra got to within a point at the 5:24 mark of the second, before grabbing a 41-40 lead on the next play to awaken the Ginebra crowd. However, Arizona Reid crashed the party with a triple on the other end to give ROS a 43-41 lead.

After two triples from Reid gave the Elasto Painters a four-point lead, Caguioa ended the second quarter with a long two for a two-point difference, 49-47 at the half.

Caguioa led all scorers after the first two quarters with 24 markers off the bench. After going 0-of-11 from the field in their last game, he came through with 11 made field goals in the first half alone. ROS, on the other hand, was led by Reid who had 18 points, and JR Quiñahan, who chipped in 10.

The first few minutes of the third quarter featured a see-saw battle with the two teams exchanging two-point leads. Ginebra finally got some distance as Caguioa made two straight jumpers for a 58-53 lead. With Ginebra threatening to pull away, Paul Lee scored on two straight baskets, followed by a Reid layup at the 6:14 mark to get ROS to within a point at 62-61.

A Beau Belga triple was quickly followed by a Gabe Norwood fast break dunk at the 3:56 mark to give ROS a 69-64 lead. This ballooned to nine points after a Ryan Araña triple to end the third quarter, ROS ahead 79-70.

“The boys played well,” Agustin said. “Nasa baba kami pero may chance pa kaming maka-angat sa top four; basta kailangan naming manalo ng dalawa pa.”

Ginebra started the fourth quarter with a 12-4 run to storm back into the ball game, getting within a single point at 83-82. The Elasto Painters were re-energized by the entry of their import. They built a six-point buffer, but baskets from Dior Lowhorn knotted the game at 92-all with 4:30 left in the game.

The next two minutes of the game saw the Elasto Painters getting two-point leads and Ginebra replying to tie the game. A layup by Reid gave ROS a 98-96 edge, but the Barangay had a chance to tie or take the lead with 40 seconds left in the game. Lowhorn was fouled by Jeff Chan with 27 seconds left in the game and the import responded by making the two free throws to tie things again at 98-all.
