Julia Barretto and Dra. Vicki Belo swear by intermittent fasting

By Racquel Quieta

Actress Julia Barretto and beauty expert Dra. Vicki Belo weighed in on current health and wellness trends, including intermittent fasting.

The two discussed these trends in a recent webinar organized by Manulife titled “Health Matters: Caring for your mental and physical well-being.”

Here's a rundown of all the trends that actor-TV host Luis Manzano enumerated to Julia Barretto and Dra. Vicki Belo and what they have to say about them.

Kombucha

Dra. Belo said kombucha has its benefits, but she still prefers to eat kimchi.

She said, “Kombucha is one of those fermented drinks that does give you microbiome. However, I would like to say also that it gives you gas. (chuckles) And it bloats you a bit. So, I would still do kimchi. But it's pwede na, if it doesn't affect you that way.”

Pimple popping videos

Webinar host Luis Manzano confessed about his love for pimple popping videos.

He revealed, “If I was gonna be a dermatologist, it would be because of that. (laughs)”

Julia also admitted to liking them and said that they were “so satisfying.”

And as for Dra. Belo, she said she never gets tired of doing the said procedure.

“I love doing it. The more creamy (laughs)… the bigger, the more exciting. That's what you call instant gratification.”

LED facial mask

Julia plead guilty of buying LED facial masks online but says nothing works better than the ones in beauty clinics.

“I bought na a lot from online stores, but you know what, honestly, nothing works better than LED mask from your clinic, from your dermatologist's clinic. So, don't do it at home pa rin.”

Plant-based meat

While Dra. Belo said that plant-based meat is not her cup of tea, Luis and Julia each had a different opinion.

Dra. Belo said, “Well, I tried it, Beyond Meat, parang hindi ako na-satisfy, you know. And then may konting dugo pa and that's vegetables, parang a little mind-blowing.”

Meanwhile, Luis said, “Ako, personally, I liked it.”

As for Julia, she said she has mixed feelings about plant-based meat.

“Ako naman, if there's a substitute, I'd try it. But I can't say totally yes because I like meat also. So, I don't want to be a hypocrite. But I've tried a lot of plant-based meat that's also really, really good.”

Beer yoga

Dra. Belo didn't mince words when she criticized the beer yoga trend.

“I think it doesn't make sense. I mean, you know, one of the reasons you do yoga is what? To stretch. And then I think the breathing is good for your stomach. Parang to put beer then you'll get a beer belly, parang counterproductive. I mean, and it's a fake relaxation. You want to learn to relax just by meditating while doing yoga.”

Glass skin facial

Julia gave the glass skin facial trend a double smiling face rating and talked about the reasons why she loves it.

“Well, the best part about it is still being confident going out even without makeup, and your skin looking luminous, glowing, and very youthful.

“And as a K-drama fan, they all have glass skin. So, I like that it's achievable now, especially in the Belo clinic.”

Pore vacuum

Dra. Belo revealed that she has misgivings about the pore vacuum procedure.

“Because it can be so traumatic on the face. I've tried it, just to see what it's like. It has so much pressure when you suction and you break blood vessels, especially around the nose.

“So, I think in a way, it might stimulate the oil glands to produce more oil. I don't think it's a good idea.”

Intermittent fasting

If there's one health and wellness trend that are both approved by Dra. Belo and Julia, it would be intermittent fasting.

Julia shared, “Me? I follow the 16-8, but if I can go longer, I will go longer.”

Dra. Belo then detailed her experience with intermittent fasting.

“I do 17-7, because I don't eat breakfast. So, I eat my last meal (at) 7 (p.m.) and then my next meal is 12 noon, usually. But if I can't take it na, mga 11, 11:30.

“Fasting is so good for your body because it stresses your body just right to wake up your anti-aging epigenomes.”

She also said, that if done right, IF can aid in body repair and make you feel lively and stronger.

“I've never felt so energetic as when I do an IF (intermittent fasting). 'Yung totoong IF ha!

“Because for so long pala, I was making mali. I was drinking vegetable juice.

“Akala ko that's still no calorie. But it had because it had half an apple, which is about 40 calories. But that destroyed the whole fast.

“So, it should really be coffee with no sugar or water lang.

“Then you'll feel like, you know, like when you're running, I hear you get a second wind?

“When you're IF-ing you feel so strong. Parang the less I eat actually the more energetic I feel.”
