By Kristian Eric Javier

Select Filipino Films are included in the Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes or the Cannes Film Festival this 2023, to be held on May 16 to 27 in France.

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) leads the Philippine delegation to the festival.

The Filipino films that are included in the Marché du Film this year are TOPAKK directed by Richard Somes, Her Locket directed by J.E. Tiglao, crime-thriller Grace by Ato Bautista, and the musical film Ako si Ninoy or I am Ninoy by Vince Tañada starring Joaquin Domagoso, JK Labajo, and Cassy Legaspi.

Several Filipino films are also part of the numerous programs of Marché du Film this year, which includes Tens Across the Borders by Chan Sze-Wei and co-produced by the Philippines, Singapore, Germany, and the United Kingdom; and Asog by Sean Devlin, documentary films included in the Cannes Docs, a program that showcases documentary films.

The goal of Cannes Docs is to “celebrate the role of documentary cinema by offering programs that specifically cater to documentary filmmakers.”

Meanwhile, the short film The Art of Detaching One's Memory by Jan Carlo Natividad is part of the Focus Work in Progress (WiP) program that focuses on promoting short films to potential distributors, producers, and film professionals “who can support filmmakers in the development of their projects.”

The Marché du Film also released a new program, Spotlight Asia, a program that strengthens connections and co-production initiatives between Asia and Europe where four Filipino Producers will participate.

Meanwhile, two other Filipino delegates will be joining the Cannes Producers Network, a platform where film producers around the world can showcase their projects to potential investors.

Also, award-winning film director Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan is one of the six directors selected to be part of the Cinéfondation Résidence - Festival de Cannes, a foundation that provides filmmakers with personalized programs to support them in writing their first or second feature-length film.

Meanwhile, renowned filmmaker and actress Isabel Sandoval is a member of the jury for the Queer Palm Award, given to films in recognition to their contribution to LGBTQIA+ cinema in the Cannes Film Festival.

The FDCP also selected 17 film companies as representatives to the Marché du Film to explore partnerships with their international counterparts.

On the other hand, the FDCP, along with the Singapore Film Commission, will be hosting the Philippine Singapore Pavillion where delegates around the world can join in-depth discussions and be introduced to Philippine Cinema.
