Bela Padilla raises more than PhP 3M for street vendors affected by quarantine in three days

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

It was on Sunday afternoon when actress Bela Padilla launched an online fund-raising campaign to help street vendors affected by the Metro Manila quarantine.

Her target? PhP 1-million to be exact.

On Twitter, the actress shared that she has set up a GoGetFunding page to extend aid to street vendors who cannot provide food for their family during the 30-day quarantine.

She wrote, “The best solution I came up with is for us to donate.

“I set up an account, and whatever money we do raise, let's split 16-ways for the 16 cities of Metro Manila affected by this community quarantine.

Bela added that she will personally see to it that the money raised will go to “the right people.”

Well, three days later, Bela's simple act of kindness has multiplied three-fold because as of today, March 18, her GoGetFundingPage has reached PhP 3.3 million.

The great news was shared by Bela on her Twitter page early Wednesday morning.

She tweeted with great enthusiasm, “I was just woken up by a call. Somebody donated 2 million pesos.

“We are now at 3.3 M pesos”

In the GoGetFunding page, titled “Pagkain Para Sa Pinoy,” Padilla wrote “During this inevitable pandemic there will be a lot of Filipinos who won't be able to rely on their normal sources of income.

“Our favorite taho, dirty ice cream and bananacue vendors won't be able to secure enough money to guarantee food for their families at the end of the day for one month until our community quarantine is over.”

Celebrity donations

Bela is among the few celebrities who are contributing a hand in donating goods to workers and frontliners during the enhanced community quarantine.

Recently, Senator Manny Pacquiao has announced his partnership with Chinese business tycoon Jack Ma who pledged 50,000 test kits to combat the coronavirus.

He wrote on Instagram, “We're excited to announce the Jack Ma Foundation, in partnership with @PacquiaoFoundation is pledging 50,000 test kits to combat COVID-19 in the Philippines.

"With everything that's happening around the world today, there is no better time to unite and do whatever we can to help each other. Thank you @JackMaFoundation for this generous donation!”

Similarly, celebrity doctors Aivee Teo and Z Teo have pledged to help health workers and people in the field by delivering thousands of face masks, hand sanitizers, and alcohols.
