GMA at 2020 PPP: Deathrow

By Aaron Brennt Eusebio

From November 20 to December 13, Filipino cinephiles will have a chance to watch hundreds of award-winning local films in the online edition of the 2020 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP).

Although this is the first edition of the film festival to be held virtually, the Film Development Council of the Philippines still wants viewers to enjoy the community experience of watching films together by having four virtual cinemas named Manila, Iloilo, Davao, and Nabunturan.

Unlike most streaming platforms where people choose which film they want to watch, the FDCP channel gives viewers access to four virtual cinemas with scheduled livestream screenings of different films.

One of the award-winning films that are part of the 2020 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino is the award-winning, GMA Films-produced 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival entry Deathrow, directed by Joel Lamangan.

'Deathrow,' which starred Eddie Garcia and Cogie Domingo, clearly depicted a juvenile delinquent's plight on death row.

For its realistic portrayal of juvenile delinquency, a relevant social issue, Deathrow garnered international acclamation from different film festivals.

The film was given the Prix Du Meilleur Film Engage au Service d'unce Cause (Prize for the Best Committed Film Championing a Cause) at the 23rd International Festival of Independent Films in Brussels, Belgium. Aside from that, Deathrow was also screened at the Cairo International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Cogie Domingo plays the character of Sonny Corpus, a neglected and unloved orphan raised in the slums of Tondo, Manila. Sonny is wrongfully convicted of murder in a heist orchestrated by his friends.

Unable to prove his innocence and age, Sonny is put on death row, where he is introduced to Lolo Sinat (Eddie Garcia), an inmate who is feared by the convicts.

Lolo Sinat took Sonny under his wings, helping him fix his broken life as he is still young.

Deathrow was part of the 2000 Metro Manila Film Festival, and took home the 2nd Best Picture, Best Editing, and Best Production Design awards.

Aside from Deathrow, other GMA Films-produced films included at the 2020 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino are Family History, Jose Rizal, Saranggola, Muro Ami, Sa Pusod ng Dagat, and Moments of Love.
