Leeroy New builds installation for Ilocos Norte’s La Milagrosa Festival
Renowned installation artist and designer Leeroy New is in Ilocos Norte as part of the province’s first La Milagrosa Provincial Festival this May 2-14.
New, the recipient of residency grants to Singapore and Australia by the Ateneo Arts Awards, and his team have spent weeks under the summer heat in the sand dunes of Paoay, Ilocos Norte constructing his large scale installation art using indigenous materials such as bamboo, abaca rope and local textile inabel.

Presently, New is creating two large scale installations. One is vessel-like in features and the other, which will be burned upon culmination of the event, is yet to reveal its full shape.
The multi-awarded artist joins some of the country’s top bands, Wolfgang and Up Dharma Down in an event spearheaded by the Ilocos Norte Provincial Government through the Communications and Media Office entitiled “Himala sa Buhangin!” on May 10. Set on the sand dunes of Paoay, the event features New’s large scale modular installation, a rock concert, sandcastle building, 4x4 racing and fireworks display.
