Bureau of Fire Protection urges fire safety in schools
Though summer has ended, the number of huge fire incidents occurred during this month of May, which is considered as the first month of the rainy season, had been notable due to severe damage it had caused to victims and their properties. For this reason, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) continues to promote fire safety to the public even during rainy season especially at schools as the opening of School Year 2012-2013 is now fast approaching.
For the first semester of this year, the Bureau has recorded an increase in the number of fire incidents which involved educational structures as compared to the first semester of 2011. It only calls for an intensified fire safety awareness at schools. BFP is now encouraging schools to participate in keeping their students and their premises safe from the danger of fire.
In order to avoid possible fire incidents at school, and to preserve a fire-free and safe school community, the management must observe the following fire safety tips:
- conduct a regular fire drill in order to inform faculty and students of the proper fire safety guidelines
- the school management must request for a fire drill to be participated by the whole school community
- school buildings must be inspected;
- there must be fire extinguishers available to be used when needed; the buildings must have fire exits and must be free from obstructions;
- electrical connections at buildings and in all classrooms must be checked;
- be careful when using match/flames during experiments or home economics class;
- flammable materials must be kept properly; and
- it will also be helpful if the school will have its own fire brigade.
By means of cooperation and awareness, the school and its constituents will have a deeper knowledge on how to prevent fire occurrence. It is then more effective if the students will have their own understanding and willingness to safeguard themselves in case of fire. — BFP press release
