Makati Shangri-la introduces Philippine-inspired cocktail, Manila sunshine

Makati Shangri-La, Manila launches Manila Sunshine, a drink originally concocted by Makati Shangri-La in support of the Department of Tourism’s ongoing efforts to promote the Philippines as a top destination.

A project initiated by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and in cooperation with Makati Shangri-La, Manila Sunshine promises to be the signature drink that will define the city of Manila, which is also the capital of the Philippines.

What makes Manila Sunshine distinctly Filipino is the base of lambanog, or coconut wine. This drink is mostly produced in the province of Quezon, which is known to be the biggest producer of lambanog; the process of making and appreciation of which has been a part of the Filipino tradition for centuries.

Apart from lambanog, Manila Sunshine also has the tropical flavors of pineapple and mango with a tinge of triple sec and dark Tanduay rum. The cocktail is finished off with a garnish of tanglad, or lemon grass, and a sliced pineapple.

Another alternative of the drink is the Virgin Manila Sunshine, a mocktail variation which makes use of the same ingredients without the alcohol component.

“I’m very pleased that the Manila Sunshine drink is finally a reality,” said DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez. “A few months ago, we asked the help of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts through [Makati Shangri-La’s Area General Manager] Reto Klauser to name a drink after Manila. They actually did it!”

The Manila Sunshine and Virgin Manila Sunshine beverages are initially launched at Circles Event Café, and are also available at Makati Shangri-La’s bars.
