Oil firm CEO/PUP alumnus receives honorary degree
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines conferred to outstanding alumnus and prominent businessman Fernando L. Martinez the degree Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, during the 2012 PUP Mid-Year Commencement Exercises on December 6 at the University Gymnasium in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
The country’s largest state university cited the chairman and chief executive officer of Eastern Petroleum Corporation for his involvement in the development efforts of the nation. Martinez is described as a business practitioner and innovator, a manager and prophet of beneficent change, and an initiator of productive ideas.
Martinez was a scholar and student leader at what was then known as the Philippine College of Commerce where he obtained the degree Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Economics in 1976. He was a recipient of the PUP Centennial Award in 2004. Previously, he served as chairman of the Independent Philippine Petroleum Corporations Association and President of the Corporate Planning Society of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, PUP President Dr. Emanuel Castro De Guzman also conferred degrees to the 672 students who graduated in this year’s Mid-Year Commencement Exercises.
Jose Mari Gonzalo Berueco, a Bachelor in Broadcast Communication major, was chosen to deliver the thanksgiving message on behalf of the all the mid-year graduates. He obtained a weighted general average of 1.735576 among all those who graduated this December.
University Registrar Prof. Melba D. Abaleta said the College of Accountancy had the most number of graduates totaling to 127. PUP Maragondon, San Juan, San Pedro, Santa Maria, Santa Rosa and Taguig Campuses came in second with a combined total of 106 graduates. The College of Business had a total of 104; College of Engineering, 102; College of Science, 48; College of Computer Management and Information Technology, 43; Open University, 31; College of Arts, 29; College of Economics, Finance and Politics, 24; College of Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Management, 15; College of Law, 10; College of Nutrition and Food Science, 7; College of Communication, 6; College of Education, 6; College of Human Kinetics, 4; and College of Languages and Linguistics, 1.
University officials, deans, directors, chairpersons, and faculty members witnessed the graduation ceremonies.
Prior to the graduation ceremonies, the graduating batch attended a baccalaureate Mass on December 5 at the PUP Inter-Faith Chapel. Dr. Samuel M. Salvador, Vice President for Academic Affairs chaired this year’s commencement exercises. Press release from Polytechnic University of the Philippines
