De La Salle Zobel kicked off 2013 with a bang by successfully hosting its first sports festival, the Brother Ceci Cup, at the DLSZ campus in Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa.
In football, ABC Stars of Naga won the 9 and under Boys category, Makati Football Club dominated the 13 and under Boys category, and La Salle Greenhills won in the Men’s Open category after edging Dolphins FC in a thrilling match in the finals. The DLSZ Girls Team A and B finished first and second place, respectively, in the Women’s Open Category.
Meanwhile, DLSZ won over Manresa in the finals to win the championship in the 12 and under Boys basketball tournament and Chevron Ateneo won the title in the Women’s Open Category.
The De La Salle Lipa Team A won the championship in High School Volleyball. However, the De La Salle Lipa team was edged out in tennis by Colegio de San Agustin Makati who won in the High School Boys category. The DLSZ tennis teams were the champions in the High School Girls, Grade School Girls and Grade School Boys categories.
In Taekwondo, DLSZ won the Kyorugi Over-all Champion Award after winning 11 gold, 10 silver, and 16 bronze medals. Team RKC came in second winning 11 golds, 5 silvers and 3 bronze medals.
Mike Atayde, President of the DLSZ Sports Development Foundation, said, “We are very excited with the turn-out of participants in this tournament. The Bro. Ceci Cup is an offshoot of the 9th DLSZ Football Festival. The foundation wanted to bring all sports to light because that is the way our late Bro. Ceci would have wanted it, and make De La Salle Zobel a center for youth interaction and education through sports.”
He added, “The football teams in the tournament were also the first to make use of the newly inaugurated artificial turf football field. It is the first of its kind south of Manila and we would like to thank DLSZ President Bro. Dennis Magbanua FSC, Green Archers United FC and Globe Telecom for making this possible. Even now, we expect next year’s sport festival to be well attended so we invite all teams to book early and reserve a slot.”
